The winner of this spring’s Takamatsunomiya Kinen has since finished runner-up in both the G1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize in Hong Kong and the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes in UK, narrowly missing out but proving himself more than capable against world-class opposition.
His sire, Lord Kanaloa, captured this very race in consecutive years (2012 and 2013). Now, he will aim to follow in his father’s footsteps with a father–son double, while also seeking to become only the sixth horse in history to sweep both the spring and autumn legs of Japan’s sprint G1 double in the same year.
Mama Cocha has primarily competed in sprint distances, and rose to prominence by winning the 2023 Sprinters Stakes. In 2025, she captured the G3 Ocean Stakes, adding to her record in top-level sprints.
Her major performances also include placing 3rd in the 2025 Takamatsunomiya Kinen and 2nd in the 2025 Keio Hai Spring Cup, demonstrating her strength even in highly competitive fields.
Toshin Macau has been a strong contender in sprint races, winning the Keihan Hai twice (2022, 2023) and also capturing the Ocean Stakes, Centaur Stakes, and Keio Hai Spring Cup.
He finished second in the Sprinters Stakes last year, further proving his consistency at the top level of domestic sprint racing.
The G1 Sprinters Stakes is a horse race organized by the Japan Racing Association (JRA), open to thoroughbreds aged 3 and older. It is an international G1 race run over 1200 meters on turf at Nakayama Racecourse. Before the distance of the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen was changed, it was the only sprint G1 race in the JRA calendar.
The race was elevated to G1 status in 1990. Originally held in December, the week before the G1 Arima Kinen, it was moved to early autumn in 2000 when Japan's sprint racing structure was reorganized. The Sprinters Stakes became an international race in 1994, allowing foreign horses to compete. Since then, renowned sprinters like Hong Kong's Silent Witness, Australia's Takeover Target, and Singapore's Rocket Man have participated.
The race is run on the outer course of Nakayama. The starting point is at the top of a hill near the entrance to the back straight, with a descent of around 4.5 meters continuing from the start through most of the backstretch. The back straight is about 275 meters long, leading into a very gentle curve at the 3rd corner. The home straight is short at about 310 meters, similar to those found on regional tracks but features a steep climb of 2.4 meters just before the finish.
