Sonshi, coming off a dominant victory in the Listed Yodo Tankyori Stakes, displayed powerful strides on January 29 at the Ritto Training Center slope course, clocking 4F in 53.1 seconds. While kept under restraint, he still finished the last furlong in 11.9 seconds, showcasing his impressive turn of foot.
Since shifting focus to 1200-meter races, Sonshi finished second in the Tanzanite Stakes two starts ago but demonstrated his adaptability last time out. "He finished strongly in a great performance. It was a race that truly reflected Sonshi's running style," recalled trainer Mitsumasa Nakauchida, emphasizing the convincing victory.
Having secured four wins over 1400 meters, Sonshi transitioned to sprint races in the latter half of last year. "There are no G1 races at 1400 meters, so the major targets are either 1200 meters or 1600 meters. We decided to go the sprinting route. His physique has developed, and he is maturing mentally as well," the trainer explained, underlining his commitment to sprint G1 races.
Despite the short turnaround of two weeks, Sonshi remains in peak condition ahead of G3 Silk Road Stakes. "A clean racing surface will be a positive factor. We need to secure enough prize money here to move on to the next big stage," said Nakauchida, highlighting the importance of this race as a stepping stone toward the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen on March 30 at Chukyo Racecourse.
