Mama Cocha, the 6-year-old mare and race favorite, celebrated a triumphant return to the winner's circle at Nakayama Racecourse, capturing her second graded stakes title in the G3 Ocean Stakes. It was her first victory since the 2023 Sprinters Stakes, marking a return to form at a venue filled with fond memories.
T M Spada set the early pace, leading through the first three furlongs in 33.7 seconds. Mama Cocha settled into a smooth rhythm in third on the outside before jockey Yuga Kawada urged her forward at the top of the stretch. Responding instantly, she reeled in third-favourite Pair Pollux, who had launched an early bid, and secured victory. Win Greatest, a 6th-favourite runner, finished strongly along the rail to complete the trifecta, resulting in a 16,290 JPY payout.
Kawada reflected on the performance, stating, "She moved the best she has in a long time during the race. It finally felt like she was able to show her true self again." It was the first graded stakes win of 2025 for both horse and rider. "Since winning at the highest level, she's had a tough time finding the results. So, for her to secure another graded stakes victory on the big stage again here means a lot. Looking ahead to the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen, if she can regain just a bit more of her best form, I believe she'll be in a good place. I hope she can continue to have a smooth preparation toward spring."
