Three-time graded stakes winner Hayayakko retired, to begin second career as riding horse

The JRA announced on June 19 that Hayayakko, a three-time graded stakes winner, has been officially retired from racing as of the same date. According to the announcement, the 9-year-old will begin a new career as a riding horse at Northern Horse Park in Tomakomai, Hokkaido.

A striking white son of King Kamehameha out of Marshmallow, Hayayakko made his debut in June 2018 in a Newcomers' race over 1800 meters on turf at Tokyo, finishing third. He scored his first win in his second start, and from his fourth race onward, he shifted focus to dirt racing. In his sixth dirt start, the 2019 Leopard Stakes, he made history by becoming the first white horse to win a graded stakes race in JRA history.

He returned to the turf in March 2022 for the Nikkei Sho, finishing a solid fifth. That summer, he captured his second graded win in the Hakodate Kinen. Though he subsequently went on a winless streak, he staged a comeback in last year's Copa Republica Argentina to claim his third graded stakes victory.

Hayayakko sustained a partial tear in the superficial digital flexor tendon of his right front leg during this year's Meguro Kinen and was pulled up mid-race, leading to his retirement. He retires with a record of 45 starts, 7 wins (3 on turf, 4 on dirt), and total earnings of 306,140,000 JPY. Owned by Masato Kaneko Holdings Co., Ltd., he was foaled on February 10, 2016.
