Last year's 2-year-old mile champion Admire Zoom showcased his sharp condition on October 9 in his final tune-up for the G2 Swan Stakes. Working solo on the Ritto Training Center's uphill slope course, he focused on the final stage of his gallop, displaying an impressive late burst with a final furlong in 11.8 seconds. After an unfulfilled spring campaign, he has clearly matured both physically and mentally over the summer. Now, he looks ready to prove his complete revival as he faces older horses for the first time in a G2 contest.
Back on his favoured stage, Admire Zoom seeks to reclaim his status as a top miler. Returning to action for the first time since finishing 14th in the G1 NHK Mile Cup, he clocked 4 furlongs in 54.1 seconds, with his last two furlongs in 12.4 and 11.8 seconds under no urging, showing brilliant acceleration and signalling he is in fine form for his autumn debut.
His final work followed a strong effort the previous week, when he recorded his personal best on the slope course, 1.5 seconds faster than ever before (4F in 51.4). Trainer Yasuo Tomomichi explained, "We worked him hard last week, so today's gallop was designed to sharpen him up at the finish." He added, "His movement was even better than last week. Considering it's his first run in five months, he's in very good shape to start the autumn season."
At the end of his 2-year-old campaign, Admire Zoom showcased his class by defeating future G1 Satsuki Sho winner Museum Mile in the G1 Asahi Hai Futurity Stakes, confirming himself among the elite of his generation. However, his spring season was frustrating, he narrowly missed victory in the G2 New Zealand Trophy and then failed to show his true ability in the NHK Mile Cup after losing a shoe shortly after the start, finishing a disappointing 14th.
This autumn comeback will be his first start against older horses and his first attempt over 1400 meters, but he is expected to use this as a springboard to reassert his presence. "His body weight hasn't changed much, but his frame and strength have improved. He's definitely developed from the inside out," said Tomomichi with satisfaction. Now stronger and more complete after the summer break, the Maurice colt returns to his favourite stage, Kyoto Racecourse, where he captured his G1 crown, ready to show his true potential once again.
