Familiar to Japanese racing fans, jockey Tom Marquand (27) begins another short-term riding stint in Japan this week. Now in his fourth tenure, he's set a clear goal, "I want to ride as many winners as possible."

Marquand rode 16 winners during his first short-term license in October 2022, followed by 20 on his second stint, and 21 from November to January during his third. Known for his physical strength and powerful riding style, he has earned the trust of connections, leading to steadily improving mounts each year.

Last time, he showcased his talent with a sweep of Races 10, 11, and 12 on the final day of his Nakayama schedule. "Every year I still get that excited feeling," he said honestly. "I hope I can meet some really good horses. I think I understand what is expected of me, and I want to work hard without forgetting the basics." Even before raceday, he appears firmly in workman mode.

Marquand is still seeking his first JRA graded stakes victory, with his best result being second in the 2024 Stayers Stakes aboard Cils Blancs. That is why the G3 Musashino Stakes, where he partners Rata Forest, carries extra weight. "It's my first graded stakes ride of this visit, and I'm getting on a good horse. I want to build momentum," he said with determination. Expectations are high for his strongest Japanese campaign yet.
