"Makari Summer Stable," has been established and opened at the foot of Mount Yotei known as "Ezo Fuji", on Japan's northern most island of Hokkaido. The opening ceremony was held on the 31st of July. The newly established farm is owned by trainer Yoshito Yahagi and has state of the art infrastructure.
Located in Hokkaido's Makari Village, this farm will serve as a relay point for horses in transit and stable staff during the summer Hokkaido Racing Series as training teams will be travelling from Hakodate Racecourse to Sapporo Racecourse. During non-race days, on-site cottages will be offered as accommodation for tourists visiting the area.
For many years, Trainer Yahagi has been focusing on addressing the challenges of long-distance transportation and stable rotations during the Hokkaido racing season. "The frequently used Urakawa farm is an 8-hour journey from Hakodate, whereas Makari Village can be reached in just 3 hours." The leading Trainer hopes that this shorter transportation time to the racehorses' destination will reduce equine fatigue and stress.
The three cottages are named after prominent racehorses that have been pillars of the stable: "Contrail," "Lys Gracieux," and "Loves Only You." As the accommodation facility is not yet officially approved, Trainer Yahagi mentioned "I believe it will be around October when guests can start staying." This initiative is also drawing attention to part of the town's revitalization efforts.
