While JRA G1 action is on its summer hiatus, Graded action comes from Niigata Racecourse this weekend. In this article, we will introduce the top three contenders for the G3 Leopard Stakes recommended by Netkeiba's original AI.
Cours Mirabeau
Under the tutelage of Ryo Terashima, Cours Mirabeau has won two of his six career starts to date, and has been placed on three occasions. His record on a dirt surface is two wins from four races. In his previous race, the Kakogawa Tokubetsu, he jumped slowly and was forced to race from the rear. Despite making notable ground in the closing stages, he failed by just three parts of a length.
So far, all of his victories have been on dirt. However, he has also shown a high level of ability on two starts on turf. The son of Drefong finished third in the G3 Kisaragi Sho and engaged in a close race with Hearts Concerto in the Wakaba Stakes, the winner subsequently finished third in the Japanese Derby. Cours Mirabeau's consistency and his significant potential indicate the probability of a strong performance on his preferred surface.
Eclogite
Since his debut, Eclogite has primarily run in races over 1400m or less on dirt. However, following a disappointing 14th-place finish in his third race, the Oxalis Sho, he has been focused on races over 1600m or further. In his fourth race, he competed over nine furlongs and won in impressive fashion. He finished third in the Hyacinth Stakes and he won the Hosu Stakes over 1800m, both on a dirt surface.
Although this will be his first appearance in Graded company, he has shown promising performances against proven G3 opposition. His ability to be competitive in Graded races is all but assured and he is highly probable to contest the finish.
Action Plan
It took seven starts for Action Plan to break his maiden. However, all appeared to click on his seventh start, he achieved a commanding win by five lengths. In his most recent excursion on the track, he competed on dirt over 1600m and was a convincing winner.
He has nine career starts with six of them over the same distance as the upcoming Leopard Stakes, 1800m dirt. Having an abundance of experience competing over this distance can be considered one of his main strengths. While this will be his first appearance in a Graded race, his proven stamina could potentially propel him to contend for the win.
