Takamatsunomiya Kinen race overview

Takamatsunomiya Kinen is a horse racing competition held at Chukyo Racecourse by the Japan Racing Association (JRA). It is classified as an international G1 race. It is open to thoroughbred horses aged four and above and is run over a distance of 1200 meters on turf. As a spring sprint championship for older horses, it holds an international G1 status. This race is originally known as the Takamatsunomiya Hai, and the race was contested over 2000 meters on turf as a Grade 2 event. However, in 1996, as part of the restructuring of sprint races, the race distance was shortened to its current 1200 meters. The race is typically held at the end of March and allows international entries from 2001.

Racecourse Feature

Chukyo 1200m turf course : The course layout features a slight incline in the first 120 meters, followed by gentle slopes leading into the corners. The corners themselves are negotiated through slightly tight spiral curves. The final straight, measuring 412.5 meters, presents a unique challenge with a steep incline from the 340-meter mark to the 240-meter mark, creating a significant elevation change of approximately 2 meters. This steep gradient, second only to the one at Nakayama Racecourse, often plays a crucial role in determining the race's outcome. The last 240 meters of the straight is relatively flat, where horses make their final dash to the finish line. This track layout often leads to thrilling finishes and adds to the race's excitement and unpredictability.
