Takarazuka Kinen race overview

The G1 Takarazuka Kinen is a horse race organized by the Japan Racing Association, holding an international Grade 1 status. Thoroughbreds aged three and older are eligible to compete. Established in 1960, initially held over a distance of 1800 meters on turf, it has been contested over 2200 meters since 1966. Following the introduction of the grading system in 1984, it was elevated to Grade 1 status.

Similar to the G1 Arima Kinen, the field for the Takarazuka Kinen is determined by fan voting which is known as "Grand Prix", with the top 10 horses receiving priority entry rights. The winner of the race is granted priority entry rights to the G1 Breeders' Cup Turf and the G1 Cox Plate in the same year. In 2019, Lys Gracieux won the Takarazuka Kinen and subsequently triumphed in the Cox Plate after venturing to Australia. The current race record is held by Titleholder, the winner in 2022, setting a course record over the 2200- meter distance at Hanshin Racecourse.

Racecourse Feature

Kyoto 2200m turf course : In 2024, due to renovations at Hanshin Racecourse, the race will be held at Kyoto Racecourse instead of the traditional venue. The race utilizes the outer track, covering a distance of approximately one lap. The starting point is near the entrance of the homestretch on the inner track, with a distance of about 400 meters to the first turn. From the middle of the back straight to the third corner, there is a 4.3-meter incline, followed by a downhill stretch from the top of the hill at the entrance to the third corner to the fourth corner. The remainder of the course is relatively flat, with the final straight measuring 404 meters (A Course).
