Shuka Sho race overview

The Shuka Sho is a G1 horse race organized by the Japan Racing Association (JRA) and held at Kyoto Racecourse. It serves as the final leg of the Filly Triple Tiara and was first established in 1996. Prior to that, the Queen Elizabeth II Cup was the concluding race of the Filly Triple Tiara, but when it was opened to older horses in 1996, the Shuka Sho was created as a G1 race exclusively for 3-year-old fillies. Since 2009, it has been open to international entries.

Unlike the traditional European-style classics, which do not have an equivalent to the Shuka Sho or Queen Elizabeth II Cup, the races for fillies, Oka Sho, Japanese Oaks, and Shuka Sho are referred to as the Filly Triple Tiara rather than "classics." In contrast, the colts' races, Satsuki Sho, Japanese Derby, and Kikuka Sho form the Classic Triple Crown. Horses finishing in the top 3 of the G2 Shion Stakes or G2 Rose Stakes earn priority entry into the Shuka Sho.

Racecourse Feature

The race is run over one lap of the inner course at Kyoto Racecourse. It starts in the middle of the home straight in front of the stands, with a distance of 309 meters to the first corner. There is an uphill stretch of about 3.1 meters from the back straight to the third corner, but the rest of the course is flat. The highest point is at the entrance to the third corner, followed by a steep downhill run into the fourth corner. The final straight is 328 meters long when run on the "A" course.
