Tenno Sho (Autumn) race overview

The Tenno Sho (Autumn), commonly referred to as "Akiten," is an international G1 horse race organized by the Japan Racing Association (JRA) for Thoroughbreds aged 3 and older. It forms part of the Autumn Triple Crown for older horses, along with the Japan Cup and Arima Kinen. Horses that win all three races in the same year are awarded a special bonus.

While the Tenno Sho is held twice a year, the Autumn version was shortened to 2000 meters in 1984, while the Tenno Sho (Spring) continues to be run over 3200 meters.

Racecourse Feature

The race starts from a pocket located at the far end of the course, with three turns. The distance to the second corner is approximately 130 meters. The final stretch is 525.9 meters long, making it the second-longest straight in Japan after Niigata's outer track. There is a 1.5-meter incline just before the third corner, followed by a 2.1-meter uphill section midway through the home stretch. The third and fourth turns are relatively gentle.
