The Mile Championship is an international G1 horse race organized by the Japan Racing Association (JRA). It is run over 1600 meters on the turf at Kyoto Racecourse and is open to horses aged 3 and older.
Established in 1984 with the introduction of the JRA grading system, the race was created to strengthen the sprint and mile racing. It is positioned as the autumn counterpart to the Yasuda Kinen, which is considered the spring's mile championship. Over the years, the race has produced a number of top-tier winners, including Nihon Pillow Winner, Nippo Teio, Oguri Cap, Daitaku Helios, Taiki Shuttle, Durandal, Daiwa Major, Indy Champ, Mikki Isle, and Gran Alegria, all renowned speedsters who have left their mark on the race's history.
The race starts from a pocket extended from the second corner on the backstretch, with a 712-meter run to the third corner (on the A Course). There is a 4.3-meter uphill climb leading to the third corner, followed by a steep downhill run into the fourth corner. Though the corners are more gradual compared to the inner course, the slope is sharp. The final straight is flat and measures 404 meters (A Course).
