This year's G1 Mile Championship brings together a strong field, and while Brede Weg may be racing for the first time over a mile, her sharp turn-of-foot makes her a formidable contender. Below are some of the main contenders.
Brede Weg, known for her razor-sharp finishing speed, has run the fastest or co-fastest final split in five of her six starts, three of which clocked in the range of 32 seconds. Though she faces top-tier colts in her first mile race, her closing speed ranks among the best in the field as she aims for a second G1 title. She will be ridden by jockey Christophe Lemaire.
Namur, last year's Mile Championship champion, heads into this race off a freshening break since her second in the Yasuda Kinen, a pattern that has served her well in the past. Known for her powerful late kick, she is primed for a repeat victory with in-form jockey Christian Demuro in the plate.
Also in the lineup are Jun Blossom, who was in dominant form in the Fuji Stakes, and Charyn, a three-time G1 winner from the UK adapting to Japanese turf. Other notable entries include Matenro Sky, who showed well in the recent Tenno Sho (Autumn), 2021 Mile Championship winner Serifos, and Soul Rush, who brings unmatched mile credentials within this field.
The Mile Championship will be held at 15:40pm (JST) at Kyoto Racecourse this coming Sunday November 17th.
