Kalpa and jockey Yutaka Take after the debut race
Two-year-old colt Kalpa, half-brother of triple G1 winner Sodashi, made his debut in the 5th race at Hakodate on July 9th. The maiden race was run over 1800 meters turf course. The highly anticipated grey colt garnered support as the second favourite at odds of 5.4, and ultimately finished in third place.
Although bumped at the start, Kalpa gradually improved his position and settled into a good rhythm the middle of the pack. He showed a strong stretch run with a good response. However, he could not close the gap on the top two and finished in third place.
Jockey Yutaka Take commented, "He ran well. He lacked the explosive speed of the top two, but he gives the impression that he will improve with more racing." Trainer Sugai praised his performance, saying, "It was a good learning experience. He needs to work on raising his head in the gate, but he gave a good effort." Kalpa's next race is scheduled for the 29th in the 1st race at Sapporo, a two-year-old maiden race over turf 1800 meters.
Kalpa's former groom, Imanami was also present at the race. He expressed relief, saying, "He did well. The competition was tough, and he was closely covered. I was nervous and my legs were trembling while watching. I'm glad I was able to see him. He did fine, and I feel relieved. Maybe next time I'll cheer for him on TV." he looked back with a smile.
