Yoshito Yahagi's stable aims to secure back-to-back victories in the G3 Leopard Stakes with three-year-old colt Mystic Lore.
In previous editions of the Leopard Stakes, horses trained by Yahagi have appeared on five occasions. In 2011, Takao Noboru and in 2013, Satono Principal each finished as runners-up. Last year, Yahagi's charge Kafuji Octagon achieved victory in the race. Currently, Yahagi has achieved three consecutive placings in recent races, indicating a strong affinity to the race.
This year, the goal is to win the race again with Mystic Lore, who is by Arrogate out of Folklore, with Tiznow as the broodmare sire. Folklore, Mystic Lore's dam, is the 2005 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies champion, and his half-sister produced Contrail, who claimed five G1 victories including the 2020 Triple Crown. This pedigree makes Mystic Lore a fitting representative of Yahagi's stable. In the current season, Mystic Lore has competed in three races, securing two victories. Although still a developing and a larger-sized horse, the impressive wins in maiden and class 1 races demonstrate undeniable potential for the future. The first hurdle for Mystic Lore will be to make it through the ballot and secure a spot in the starting field, but with that accomplished, even a dominant performance would not be surprising.
