The sole Japanese challenger Breakup, ridden by Kohei Matsuyama, could finish only 16th in Tuesday's G1 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse in Australia. Jockey Matsuyama commented, "We had to spend quite a long time inside the barriers and could not jump out of the barrier smoothly." Trainer Yoshioka added, "He seemed not wanting to go forward. I have talked to Kohei and he felt that as well. I think Breakup could not focus on the race because it is a completely different environment."
