Macau horse racing to cease operations from April 1st

Macau horse racing will end from April 1st, several local media reported the news on January 15th.

Macau is one of the special administrative regions in China, and the racecourse is in the northwestern part of Taipa Island. Flat racing has been held there since 1989, and the turf course and night lighting system were completed in the 1990-91 season.

Macau horse racing has ties with Japanese horse racing officials as well, with Yukio Okabe winning the Macau Derby in 1994. Shogo Nakano, a former Funabashi horse racing jockey, moved to Macau in 2018 and became the second Japanese jockey in history to win a race in 2011. Jockeys such as Toshio Uchida and Mai Beppu have also ridden in Macau.

In the Official Gazette dated January 15th, it was revealed that the contract between the government and the Macau Jockey Club was terminated due to financial difficulties and other reasons. It is second large blow for racing in Asia, it was announced that Singapore horse racing will be discontinued in fall of 2024.
