In winning the Yayoi Sho on Sunday, Tastiera secured a first stakes success not only for himself but also for his sire, Satono Crown. It was a fitting success for trainer Noriyuki Hori, who not only trained the sire, but was also completing a father-son double in the race, taken by in 2015 by Satono Crown.
Odds-on favourite Top Knife came in second a length behind Tastiera and One Direct finished third. The winning time was 2:00.4. The first three finishers all earned automatic entry into the Japanese 2000 Guineas Satsuki Sho.
Jockey Matsuyama has now won two graded stakes in two consecutive weeks on horses trained by Hori. In an interview after the race, he stated: "I am so thankful to Mr Hori for giving me a chance to ride these magnificent horses." Matsuyama went on to reflect: "I watched the previous races of Tastiera and saw a few moments where he was not responding to his jockey so sharply, and decided to positioned him where we could act quickly. It was a slow pace but we travelled well and he responded well too."
