Shahryar, the 2021 Japanese Derby winner, officially retired from racing following his runner-up finish in the G1 Arima Kinen and departed Ritto Training Center on the morning of the 26th. Under the watchful eyes of former jockey-turned-trainer Yuichi Fukunaga, who rode him to victory in the Japanese Derby, Shahryar boarded the horse transport bound for Shadai Stallion Station in Abira, Hokkaido, where he will begin his stud career.
Trainer Fukunaga, gently stroking Shahryar's face and offering words of gratitude, said, "I'm glad he was able to transition safely to his role as a stallion. Like Contrail, he inherited many of Deep Impact's traits. I'm looking forward to seeing his success as a sire."
Shahryar's former trainer, Hideaki Fujiwara, reflected on the horse's journey, "He has achieved a lot over a long period, building a strong resume and reaching the wonderful destination of becoming a stallion. Success as a sire isn't just about pedigree, it also requires great mental fortitude. Shahryar possesses exceptional overall ability, and on top of that, his mental strength is extraordinary. I'm confident he will produce outstanding offspring."
