Darley Japan released a statement on 25th, announcing that Discreet Cat, sire of Graded Stakes winners Obamburumai and Air Khalifa, had passed away. He was 20 years old and had been standing at Darley Stallion Station in Hidaka, Hokkaido.
Discreet Cat, a US-bred horse, made his debut at Saratoga Racecourse in 2005 and was subsequently purchased by Godolphin. In the 2006 G2 UAE Derby, Flamme de Passion from Japan in opposition, Discreet Cat won by a margin of six lengths to achieve his first Graded stakes success under Frankie Dettori. The son of Forestry went on to win the G1 Cigar Mile Handicap in the US, maintaining a perfect record of six wins from six starts.
After retiring from racing, he stood as a stallion in Kentucky, and he also shuttled to Brazil for southern hemisphere stud duties. Discreet Cat was transferred to Darley Japan for the start of the 2017 breeding season.
Harry Sweeney, President, and CEO of Darley Japan, expressed his condolences, "Today has been an incredibly difficult day for us. He started his stud career in Japan at the age of 14, but despite that, he was very well received by Japanese breeders, he covered over 750 broodmares in six full seasons. He was a very gentle horse and was a pleasure to work with. We are filled with gratitude for his achievements and we hope he rests in peace. I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to all the owners, breeders, and everyone involved with the horse who supported him."
