Satono Crown colt Tastiera became the 2023 Japanese Derby winner on Sunday, guided by Damian Lane. Unbeaten G1 Satsuki Sho winner Sol Oriens finished second and Hearts Concerto came home in third.

It was an historic win for the JRA record books as Damian Lane became the first jockey in 69 years to win the Derby aboard a horse he hadn't partnered in a previous race. Lane commented on this historic victory that, "This is a special win for me. I am grateful for all the support from trainer Hori and the owner's group, Carrot Club."

The pair positioned in midfield and held off the late challenge of Sol Oriens, and Lane reflected on their passage, "He jumped out of the gate smoothly and I was able to guide him to his favourite spot to keep him relaxed." Having finished second on stablemate Salios behind Contrail in the 2020 Derby, Lane added, "I am glad that I was able to win the race as I got another chance from the same Hori stable."
