The JPN I Teio Sho has a long history as the main race that decides the title of best dirt horse in the NAR for the first half of the season. Here are the main contenders for the 2000 metre race that includes horses trained in both the JRA and NAR.

Defending Teio Sho Champion, Meisho Hario, is an obvious place to start in a preview of the famous race. The son of Pyro has maintained a high level of form that includes placed efforts at G1, he won the Kashiwa Kinen on his last start in early May. Jockey Suguru Hamanaka commented, "He prefers a right-handed track as opposed to a left. It seems that he performs perfectly on both types of racecourses."

Promised Warrior is an interesting runner in this Teio Sho. He started his racing career with a comfortable victory but experienced a long period of recovery from three individual bone fractures. On his return, he has recorded five consecutive wins and is looking to make it six on the trot.

T O Keynes won the 2021 Teio Sho and the G1 Champions Cup winner becoming the JRA Best Dirt Racehorse of the year 2021. He has been placed in and won several dirt stakes races and is looking to add more silverware to his already impressive collection.

Ranryo O is the most notable runner trained under the jurisdiction of the NAR. He has been competing against JRA horses at graded-stakes level and is the winner of Kumotori Sho, Oi Kinen, and Tokyo Kinen. He has been out of form but won the Brilliant Cup in April. If he appears in his best form, he is a live contender to spring a mild surprise. Other runners include 2021 G1 Champions Cup winner Jun Light Bolt and the UAE Derby winner Crown Pride.
