A grandson of the late great Deep Impact has achieved a remarkable feat in the UK. On March 15th, the Triumph Hurdle was run at Cheltenham racecourse in England, home of prestigious Cheltenham Festival. Majborough, a son of Martinborough, won the JCB Triumph Hurdle and the Deep Impact bloodline was once again in racing headlines.
The winner is a son of Martinborough out of Janimone by Lavirco. Majborough is trained by Willie Mullins, Champion National Hunt trainer in Ireland. His sire, a son of Deep Impact, won the JRA G3 Chunichi Shimbun Hai and Niigata Kinen in 2014 and was retired to stud in France.
The Cheltenham Festival is a horse racing meeting held each year in March in the United Kingdom. It is held over four days and features 28 races, including 14 Grade 1 races. It is the event that determines the champions of the British and Irish jumping circuits and attracts star horses from several countries.
Last year, Auguste Rodin, a son of Deep Impact, won the British and Irish Derby, much to the delight of Japanese horse racing fans, and now a grandson of Deep Impact has achieved great success in the jumping sphere. Although the number of direct descendants is decreasing each year, the success of the grandchildren and great-grandchildren appears guaranteed to continue.
