A year has passed since his sensational performance. Prognosis, last year's winner, is aiming to retain his title in the Sapporo Kinen.

The six-year-old son of Deep Impact but continues to maintain his top-level form. His schedule is the same as last year, but with more substance: two races ago, he won the G2 Kinko Sho by five lengths over reigning G1 Kikuka Sho winner, although his manager pointed out that he was not at his best. In his last start, the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup in Hong Kong, he finished second for the second year in a row, but despite a slow start, he pushed hard in the stretch but just failed behind Romantic Warrior, the subsequent winner of the G1 Yasuda Kinen, by a neck.

Assistant Fukunaga said, "It was a disappointing result, but this race showed what Prognosis is capable of, as you can see from the margin of victory. He was strong in defeat and proved once again that he is capable of winning a G1 title".

After returning to the stables from the Yamamoto Training Center in Miyagi Prefecture in mid-July, the week-long prep workout on the Ritto woodchip course was a highlight of the day. Ridden by Makoto Nishitani (Kawada in the race), Prognosis was worked with an emphasis on composure from the start, and when he was strongly pushed, he extended his stride to a sharp pace, marking 6F 83.8-37.3-11.0 seconds, which was a good indication of his good form.

Assistant Fukunaga said, "He's doing well with the usual adjustments. Same rotation and same adjustment process as last year. I want to get him in good shape so that we can get the same result as last year".

He has been ridden carefully since returning to the stable after his trip to Hong Kong. He is almost ready to run. He will be ridden with absolute confidence on his favorite stage and then in the G1 race in the fall.
