Shahryar ready for his comeback from surgery in the G2 Sapporo Kinen

Shahryar, the 2021 G1 Japanese Derby winner, completed his final track work on the woodchip track at Hakodate Racecourse on the 14th, effortlessly pulling ahead by a length-and-a-half, showcasing his excellent condition ahead of the G2 Sapporo Kinen.

Despite continuous rain since Monday, the heavy and waterlogged track at Hakodate posed no issues for Shahryar. Under jockey Yuichi Kitamura (who will be replaced by Yutaka Take for the race), Shahryar followed Hawaiian Icon, who was seven-and-a-half lengths ahead. With a light signal from Kitamura, Shahryar smoothly increased his pace, covering 5 furlongs in 69.0 seconds, finishing with a final 13.1 seconds and easily passing his workmate by a length-and-a-half.

Kitamura, who also rode Shahryar in a track work two weeks ago, emphasized the horse's clear improvement, saying, "He has undoubtedly gotten better overall." Groom Fujiwara was equally optimistic, stating, "Everything has gone smoothly, just as planned. He's in perfect condition, having been put under the right amount of pressure, and his movements are excellent."

Last year, Shahryar finished a disappointing 11th, but the cause was clear, "It was the throat," said the assistant trainer, referring to the issue that led to surgery. "He's improved immediately after the surgery, and his weight should be around the low 460 kg range. While he can handle softer ground, we'd prefer to see him on a good track."

With the legendary Yutaka Take taking the reins this time, there is anticipation for what kind of chemistry will emerge, and Shahryar's preparation indicates he is ready to deliver.
