As she heads into the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup this weekend, Regaleira, known for her powerful finishing speed, looks to capture her second G1 title since the Hopeful Stakes after taking on colts in the spring classics with impressive late charges.
In the spring, she competed in the 3-year-old Classics, making the fastest final splits in both the Satsuki Sho and Japanese Derby, where she bravely held her ground against male horses. She finished just behind Urban Chic in the Satsuki Sho, who later won the Kikuka Sho. Though she faced a challenging position in her last race, the Rose Stakes, Regaleira still delivered a powerful finish. This will be her first time racing over Kyoto Racecourse, but with the 2200m outer course well-suited to her running style, she is expected to be a strong contender. She will be ridden by Christophe Lemaire.
Saliera, a well-bred mare with recent results that have not quite matched her potential, was just a neck behind T O Royal, the Tenno Sho (Spring) winner, three starts back. Although she finished sixth in last year's Queen Elizabeth II Cup, she managed to clock the fastest final split, showing her closing strength. She will be partnered with jockey Ryan Moore and is a threat if conditions align.
Other notable runners include Shinryokuka, who finished a close ninth in last year's Queen Elizabeth II Cup, Scintillation, who was narrowly beaten by last year's Queen Elizabeth II Cup winner in her last start, the consistent Wholeness, Stunning Rose (the 2022 Shuka Sho winner), and Harper, who has consistently performed well in the Triple Tiara and Queen Elizabeth II Cup races. Post time is set for 3:40 p.m.
