The "Hokkaido Summer Sale," Japan's largest horse sale, in term of quantity, took place in Shin-Hidaka, Hokkaido, from August 19 to 24, concluding after six days of action.

During the sale, 1,187 horses were offered, with 977 (548 colts and 429 fillies) successfully sold. The total sales amounted to 6.486 billion JPY (excluding tax), with a clearance rate of 82.31%. The average price was slightly over 6.63 million JPY, and 186 horses were sold for 10 million JPY or more.

The highest-priced horse was 23 ex Lady Madonna (a filly, by Henny Hughes), which sold for 48 million Yen on the final day to Yoshimasa Ema. The top-priced colt was 23 ex Dancing Royal (a colt, by Henny Hughes), sold on the second day to Takayoshi Narita.

After the sale, Chairman Furukawa commented, "I was concerned about the final day's results, but I was pleasantly surprised and grateful that my worries were unfounded. Ideally, we'd like to complete the sale in five days, but with the increasing number of horses on offer, extending it to six days was necessary to reduce the burden on buyers and sellers. Given the circumstances, achieving the highest clearance rate on the final day was an unexpected but welcome outcome. We'll consider these results when planning next year's schedule with the market committee."
