Third-favorite Sunrise Zipangu claimed his second graded stakes win in the G3 Miyako Stakes, following the Furaibo Sho, and earned a spot in the G1 Champions Cup (December 1 at Chukyo Racecourse). Outrange came in second at odds of 11-1, while Lord Avenir, a 9-1 shot, finished third. The favourite, Omega Guiness, ended up in tenth place.
The final stretch saw a fierce battle as Sunrise Zipangu closed in on the leading Outrange. Responding to jockey Katsuma Sameshima's urging, he surged forward and clinched victory just before the wire.
Sameshima, smiling, said, "I'm really happy, he held on well in the stretch." He added, "This morning in America, our rival Forever Young put in a strong performance in the G1 Breeders' Cup Classic with a third-place finish, and that was inspiring." With a ticket to the Champions Cup secured, Sameshima concluded confidently, "I think we have a real chance if we make it to the Champions Cup."
