Unicorn Lion no match for Dubai Honour in G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes

Monday, 10 April, 2023 19:00

Unicorn Lion, the sole Japanese runner in the G1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick Racecourse, finished valiantly in fifth place.

Unicorn Lion bravely took the lead and set a solid gallop throughout. However, he could not fend off the impressive finishing turn-of-foot shown by race favourite, Dubai Honour ridden by Tom Marquand. This was Dubai Honour's second G1 win, following a comprehensive victiry in the G1 Ranvet Stakes. Mo'unga finished second, two and a half lengths behind, with the nine-time G1 winner, Amamoe, finishing in third.

Trainer Yoshito Yahagi reflected, "I think starting from outside did not work for us. It really made it difficult for Unicorn Lion to take a prominent position and resulted in him using too much stamina in the early stages of the race. He tried his best against world-class competitors, but it's a shame he couldn't win."
