On December 18, the retirement of Melody Lane, an 8-year-old mare, was announced. Known for her remarkable feats despite her small stature, she captured fans' hearts as an idol horse, breaking the Japan Racing Association's record for the lightest race-winning weight (338kg) and finishing fifth in the G1 Kikuka Sho as a filly.
The day after the announcement, trainer Naoyuki Morita shared his thoughts. "She always had frail legs, and we couldn't overcome that. She's given more than enough, and I'm relieved she can safely enter her broodmare career." He reflected fondly on her career, "The most memorable moment was her maiden win. It was the first time I cried over a race, even during my time as a stablehand, that never happened. I never thought she would stay in racing this long. She was so small that we initially planned to send her to breeding after two or three starts if she didn't perform. It's been a joy to be with her all these years."
Melody Lane is set to join the broodmare ranks at Okada Stud in Hokkaido. "I hope she produces beautiful foals. Her caretakers will surely miss her. It's bittersweet, but I'll visit her whenever I can," Morita said, expressing his gratitude and affection for the beloved mare.
