Sol Oriens winning the G1 Satsuki Sho

Sol Oriens ridden by Takeshi Yokoyama won the G1 Satsuki Sho (the Japanese 2000 Guineas) in spectacular style on Sunday. The pair started from the back of the group and waited for the best time to push forward. Tastiera drew away from his rivals in the home straight but could not hold on to his lead when Sol Oriens was asked to make up ground. Sol Oriens answered Yokoyama with an incredible dash for home in the last furlong.

Tastiera finished second, one and 1/4 lengths behind the winner and the favourite Phantom Thief came in third.

Sol Oriens is a son of Kitasan Black out of Skia, by Motivator. Sol Oriens made history by becoming the first horse to win Satsuki Sho in the third start of his career.
