Jockey Futoshi Komaki (aged 56) is set to challenge for a graded stakes victory with World Revival, a horse with a strong track record at Kokura, in the G3 Chukyo Kinen this Sunday before he makes a return to NAR Hyogo Regional racing.

Komaki, now in his 21st year since transferring to the Japan Racing Association from the National Association of Racing in 2004, reflects on a career that hasn't always been smooth. "Initially, it was tough to be accepted by those around me, and I felt quite isolated," Komaki recalls. "It was during those tough times that former trainer Kojiro Hashiguchi extended a helping hand. He gave me the opportunity to ride some great horses and gain a lot of experience," he says with gratitude.

The most memorable race of his career was his first G1 victory in the 2008 Oka Sho, where he made a stunning come-from-behind win with 12th favourite Reginetta. "I was almost ready to give up on winning a G1 race, but that victory rejuvenated me," he said, reflecting on the significant confidence boost it provided.

Now entering the third chapter of his career, Komaki approaches his "last graded stakes" as a registered JRA jockey. He personally requested to ride from his long-time friend, trainer Kazuya Makita and had the opportunity to ride World Revival in the final track work session. "The horse felt good. The track seems to be in better shape than I expected, which should suit this horse," he said, feeling optimistic about the upcoming race.

"This is the culmination of 21 years. I want to pour my soul into every ride as a JRA jockey until the very end." At 56, Komaki continues to fuel his passion and aim for the top, determined to give his all in his final moments as a JRA jockey before moving on to the next stage of his career.
