"I was on edge" Daisuke Sasaki and Magic Sands win thrilling G3 Sapporo Nisai Stakes

Third-favorite Magic Sands captured his first graded stakes victory in Saturday's G3 Sapporo Nisai Stakes with his second consecutive win since debuting. He settled mid-pack during the race, began his sprint after the third corner, and was challenging for the lead by the fourth corner. In the stretch, he powered down the centre of the track, narrowly holding off a strong finish from sixth-favourite Arma Veloce by a nose. The winning time was 1 minute 50.3 seconds.

Jockey Daisuke Sasaki, who claimed his first graded stakes win earlier this year in the Hakodate Nisai Stakes aboard Satono Carnaval, has now secured back-to-back victories in 2-year-old graded stakes races in the Hokkaido series. Reflecting on the race, he said, "I was on edge until the very end. When he hit the front, he started to idle a bit, so I was just hoping he could hold on."

As the autumn racing season approaches, Sasaki, who has already achieved a career-high pace with 51 wins in the JRA this year at just 20 years old, stated, "My goal for the year is 70 wins. I'll keep pushing to achieve that."

Trainer Naosuke Sugai, who manages Magic Sands, secured his fourth victory in this race, following wins with Red Reveur in 2013, Admire Eikan in 2015, and Sodashi in 2020. Arma Veloce finished second, while the favourite, Feiern Kranz, took third place.
