The second favourite, Toshin Macau, made a dazzling late charge to claim his fourth graded stakes victory in the G2 Centaur Stakes on Sunday. Finishing second was the fourth favourite, Mama Cocha, with the seventh favourite, Mozu Meimei, securing third. The pre-race favourite, Puro Magic, finished a disappointing 13th.
Puro Magic led the field into the final stretch, where Mama Cocha briefly took the lead from a prominent position. However, Toshin Macau, who had steadily advanced from the outside, unleashed a powerful finishing kick to overtake Mama Cocha just before the wire.
Winning jockey Akira Sugawara, commented, "I was a bit uncertain because we hadn't had much success in left-handed circuit graded stakes before. But the horse showed good form in track work, so I hoped we could get the best out of him. In the stretch, he responded well and was making up ground, so I was hoping he'd get past the leader." With the horse in peak form ahead of the big autumn races, Sugawara added, "The G1 Sprinters Stakes is the main goal, and this was a prep race, so we left a bit in the tank. But I think we're in good shape heading into the main event."
