Mad Cool, winner of this year's G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen, is looking to bounce back in the autumn's sprint showdown, the G1 Sprinters Stakes. After a disappointing 11th-place finish in his April trip to Hong Kong, the G1 winner has regrouped during his time off and now targets redemption in the race where he finished a close second last year. If Mad Cool can return to his best form, he could become the first horse since Fine Needle in 2018 to capture both the spring and autumn sprint G1 titles in the same year.
Mad Cool's hunger for revenge is evident after his narrow defeat in last year's Sprinters Stakes, where he ran a brilliant race but was beaten by a nose by Mama Cocha. Following that, he placed 8th in his first overseas challenge, the G1 Hong Kong Sprint. However, he made a strong comeback in his next start, winning the G1 Takamatsunomiya Kinen, and earning his G1 credentials.
His second trip abroad in the G1 Hong Kong Chairman's Sprint Prize resulted in a surprising 11th-place finish. Groom Nagura reflected on the race, saying, "It might have been the heavy rain and track conditions, or perhaps fatigue, but we're not entirely sure. What's clear is that he didn't perform to his potential." Since then, Mad Cool has been revitalized, and preparations have gone smoothly. Nagura added, "We conditioned him at Northern Farm Shigaraki to get him accustomed to the heat. His jockey gave him a strong workout last week, and he looked powerful. Everything is on track."
Nakayama Racecourse, where Mad Cool finished 1st and 2nd in two starts last year over 1200 meters on turf, is a favourable stage for him. Nagura expressed confidence, saying, "He handles Nakayama's slope well, and he's comfortable on fast tracks. We could ask for nothing more in his preparation, so we'll keep things light this week." With everything falling into place, another G1 title could be on the horizon for Mad Cool, following his spring triumph.
