Weltreisende, a potential runner in the Osaka Hai

The Osaka Hai, which will be run at Hanshin Racecourse on April 2nd, has attracted a total of eighteen potential runners.

Three of those - Weltreisende, Potager, and Arata - are 6YO horses born in 2017. This puts them in the same generation as the winners of the Saudi Cup (Panthalassa) and Dubai Cup (Ushba Tesoro). Even though some of the Japanese greats such as Contrail, Salios, Lei Papale, and Resistencia were retired by this age, 6YO horses are still enlivening Japanese horse racing.

Meanwhile, there is the performance factor to consider with advanced years too. The results of 6YO horses in the past ten editions of the Osaka Hai read: 0-1-2-27. The last time a 6YO was victorious was back in 2010 when the sixth favourite T M Encore won against the sire of Weltreisende, Dream Journey. The Osaka Hai is a race where typically 4 or 5YO have shown strong results. However, it will be interesting to pay attention to how those three 6YO horses fare this year, given the recent exploits of those in the same generation.
