On November 5 at Flemington Racecourse, the 164th G1 Melbourne Cup saw Knight's Choice, ridden by Robbie Dolan, charge from the back of the pack, weaving through horses in the stretch to claim victory in a time of 3:19.53.
Just a head behind in second place was Japan's Warp Speed, who also made a powerful move from mid-pack, slicing through the field to surge forward. Okita Soushi, positioned near the leaders, stayed on strongly to finish third, about three-quarters of a length further back.
Japanese jockey Akira Sugawara guided Warp Speed from a mid-to-rear position, gradually advancing before making an impressive late run, pushing Knight's Choice right to the wire in a tight finish. The winning Knight's Choice, sired by Extreme Choice out of Midnight Pearl (by More Than Ready), had previously finished fifth in the G3 Bendigo Cup. Benefiting from a light 51.5 kg weight, he capitalized on the opportunity to secure his first G1 title in spectacular style.
