After a disappointing 13th-place finish in the Tenno Sho (Autumn), Liberty Island completed her final track work on December 4th in preparation for a comeback in the G1 Hong Kong Cup. The filly worked enthusiastically on the turf course at Sha Tin Racecourse, signalling readiness to face the world's elite. Meanwhile, local contender Massive Sovereign (4yo gelding, Hong Kong) has withdrawn from the race due to a left hind leg injury.
The Japanese star cut an imposing figure in Hong Kong, showcasing her powerful stride during her final tune-up under jockey Yuga Kawada. Liberty Island clocked an impressive 4F in 51.2 seconds, with a final 2F in 22.5 seconds on the turf.
Kawada carefully assessed her condition during the gallop and commented, "The goal was to confirm her condition and determine how much work she needed. Given the challenges of long-distance travel and quarantine, I'm relieved to see how well she has handled everything. Her movement today confirmed she's in very good shape."
Last year, Liberty Island dominated her peers, claiming the Fillies' Triple Tiara in commanding fashion. She carried that form into the Japan Cup, finishing a strong second to Equinox, and further proved her global class earlier this year with a third-place finish in the Dubai Sheema Classic. However, she faced a setback with inflammation in the suspensory ligament of her right foreleg. Her return in the Tenno Sho (Autumn) as the favourite ended in disappointment, but the Hong Kong Cup presents an opportunity to reaffirm her international status.
Having guided her through each stage of her journey, Kawada spoke highly of his partner, saying, "She has matured with experience, and her ability to settle quickly has been evident here in Hong Kong. Her mental state is excellent. There's a local champion in the field, but if Liberty Island can perform to her true ability, she'll run her race."
Now poised to shine again on the global stage, Liberty Island aims to reclaim her place among the best.
