On the 16th, the Japan Racing Association announced that jockey Joao Moreira from Brazil has been granted a short-term jockey's license. While he had ridden during the week of the February Stakes earlier this year, this marks the first time he has obtained a short-term license since the autumn of 2018, making it a return after a five-year gap.
After obtaining his jockey's license in Brazil in the year 2000, he rode in various locations such as Singapore and Hong Kong. During his time in Hong Kong, he achieved three consecutive seasons as the leading jockey from the 2014-15 season onwards. He first came to Japan in 2014 and obtained a short-term license in 2016. During his 2018 stint, he secured his first victory in a Japanese Grade 1 race, the Queen Elizabeth II Cup, aboard the horse Lys Gracieux. His overall records in JRA races include 363 starts, 117 wins, and 4 graded stakes victories.
